From its inception following the Nakba, Israel has maintained a strictly apartheid system in varying forms.  Having failed to complete its ethnic cleansing in 1948, an Arab population remained which was subjected to martial law through 1966, deprived entirely of civil rights.   The 1950 Israeli law regarding "absentee property" declared all Arab properties vacated even briefly between November 1947 and May 1948 to be "abandoned" and therefore subject to confiscation and reassignment to Jewish occupancy and ownership.  The Israeli refusal to allow displaced Arabs to return to their homes and properties was and remains in direct violation of international law and UN Resolution 194 under which Israel is bound as a UN member state.

Approximately 20% of the Israeli population remains Arab, and are denied equal rights and access to equal services under most of Israel's "Basic Laws" that regulate their society in lieu of a constitution, which they have never developed since the ethnic discrimination upon which they insist to maintain the "Jewish character" of the state would be incompatible with a constitutional government following any modern democratic model.

The situation in occupied Palestine is far worse, with relentless land theft since 1967 and ever-increasing "settlement" of Israeli citizens on progressively confiscated land in direct violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and numerous UN resolutions.  This has continued unabated through a series of token "peace processes" used to appease international opinion and hold Palestinian demands at bay with faint glimmers of hope.  Israel has stolen the best land, controls water resources that are inequitably distributed, has built a network of Jewish-only roads and a network of checkpoints where Palestinians must present ID to IOF troops and are delayed and detained at IOF will, and most recently, has been constructing the Great Levantine Wall to further separate, isolate, squeeze, economically cripple, and humiliate the Palestinian population.

Settlers are recruited worldwide to come to Israel, enjoy state-subsidized housing on free land taken from Palestinians, and are allowed to carry weapons which are denied to Palestinians.  Settlers are protected by the Israeli Occupation Force (IOF) and enjoy impunity from arrest and prosecution for their frequent violence and intimidation against Palestinians.

Over 18,000 Palestinian homes and over a million fruit and olive trees have been destroyed by the IOF in addition to other ruthless attacks on the Palestinian economy and capacity to function autonomously, reducing annual per capita income in Palestine to about $800 compared with some $25,000 among Israeli Jews.

The routine excuses for these violations and for grossly disproportionate military violence (see
www.ifamericansknew.org) is "security."  The real reasons are well described as a "matrix of control" by Israeli NGO leader and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Jeff Halper at www.icahd.org.
